Coach Lab

Coach Lab

Better youth coaches. Together.

Coach Lab is designed to challenge your thinking, inspire new ideas and empower you to be a better youth coach.

It exists to help you make a meaningful difference in the lives of the young athletes you serve.

Coach Lab focuses on the physical and mental foundations of performance. We’ll help you develop your understanding and learn practical tools to apply in your own environment.

We’ll also connect you with a group of like-minded youth coaches striving to be the best they can be.

Term 4

We’re running three 90-minute workshops that will teach you how to enhance your athlete’s movement skill, focus their attention to accelerate learning and work more collaboratively with the athletes around them.

Each workshop delivers unique take-home messages, but common threads are woven throughout. So, you can attend just one or come along to them all to amplify your learning!

Workshop One

Appropriate Challenge: Tuesday 6 November, 7.00pm - 8.30pm

This workshop covers how to develop your athlete’s movement skill by creating appropriate challenge.

Science shows that when the learning challenge meets an individual’s skill level appropriately, athletes engage fully with their environment and development is optimised.

By attending this workshop, you will learn:

  • What appropriate challenge is and exactly how it is used to improve movement skill
  • Why appropriate challenge develops more motivated, determined athletes
  • How to use appropriate challenge to build resilience

Workshop Two

Act with Purpose: Tuesday 20 November, 7.00pm - 8.30pm

Do your athletes lack motivation?

Do your athletes struggle to take decisions into their own hands?

Do your athletes fail under pressure?

This workshop explores how to help your athletes find purpose, empowering them to commit fully to their learning, solve difficult challenges, increase their confidence, and ultimately, perform better.

By attending this workshop, you will learn:

  • Why focusing on too many things at once is detrimental to performance
  • How to develop purpose in your athletes, regardless of ability and stage of development.
  • How to act with purpose yourself and why it’s so important

Workshop Three

Peer Mentoring: Tuesday 4 December, 7.00pm - 8.30pm

Peer mentoring is a simple yet overlooked coaching tool. In this workshop, we will show you exactly what it looks like and how to use it successfully in your sessions.

By attending this workshop, you will learn:

  • Why peer mentoring is one of the best learning tools you can implement
  • The three key parts to an effective peer mentioning programme
  • How to use peer mentoring to better manage large groups and other common coaching challenges
